European Community has introduced for the first time measures regarding packaging waste management in 1985 by adoption of Directive concerning the packaging for liquids addressed to human consumption.

The Directives which have developed, EU Directive 94/62 EC , Directive 2004/12/EC (revision in 2005), had a positive impact concerning European packaging waste management and into a responsible behavior of European citizens regarding protection of their environment.

The term of “producer responsibility” became an integral part of European Union environment policy, bringing this concept to life, being possible with the help of industry representatives which have implemented an efficient recovery and recycling packaging waste system ( international recognized ) : Der Grüne Punkt System..

What is Der Grüne Punkt

Der Grüne Punkt appeared in 1995, when Duales System Deutschland AG, Germany, decided to transfer the right to use its trademark to a European organisation „Packaging Recovery Organization Europe s.p.r.l.”- P.R.O. EUROPE www.pro-e.org.

P.R.O. EUROPE Organization www.pro-e.org has 30 organisations from Europe and North America which implemented Der Grüne Punkt system..

In Romania, the organisation implementing Der Grüne Punkt system at a national level is ECO – ROM AMBALAJE S.A., P.R.O. EUROPE member since 2004.

All European Der Grüne Punkt systems have in common the decision taken by all companies bound to fulfill legal obligations related to packaging (producers, bottlers, retailers or importers) to create a national recovery organization which should take over these responsibilities.

Der Grüne Punkt System

Der Grüne Punkt system takes into consideration the interests of all participants, trying to find the most cost-effective and environmental-friendly solutions. They are non-profit organisations and use Der Grüne Punkt logo

The organisations conducting their activity based on the principles of Der Grüne Punkt system coordinate the collecting, sorting and recovering of packaging and packaging waste on behalf of their customers. These organisations establish partnerships with local authorities, private or municipal sanitation companies and companies that will recover or recycle the collected and sorted packages.

Der Grüne Punkt became an European trademark, as it is used in 30 countries both in Europe and America, over 130.000 of companies being allied to this system.

Der Grüne Punkt Trademark

Der Grüne Punkt became an international trademark, more than 460 billions of packages are marked with this financing symbol on their labels.

The presence of Der Grüne Punkt trademark on a package shows that for that specific package a financial contribution was paid to a national package recovery organisation, according to the principles stipulated by the European Directive 04/12/EC on packages and package waste and by the each national legislation.

Der Grüne Punkt logo indicates to the buyer that the manufacturer or the importer of those products is a socially responsible company, since it took the commitment to have all its product packages recycled or recovered after being collected from the population in separate bins.

Since 15 October 2004 ECO - ROM AMBALAJE S.A. has licensee for using Der Grüne Punkt trademark in Romania .
